Cataract evaluations: A five-step process

We take great care when evaluating and treating all patients. Here, we present a step-by-step summary of cataract evaluations to give you insight about this thorough five-step process. Patients should expect to spend about 2 hours in our office for this consultation. If the patient decides on surgery, another date will be scheduled for the procedure.

Step 1: Work up
Estimated time: 30-40 minutes
The first step in evaluating a potential cataract patient is getting to know them and their vision-related issues. With the patient, we complete a health, ocular and family history and review current medications. We also analyze present illnesses and symptoms and conduct a visual system check (EOMs, APD check, IOP, angle grade, BP, weight, dominant eye).

Step 2: Dilation
Estimated time: 30 minutes

Step 3: Consult
Estimated time: 20 minutes
After the patient is dilated, we discuss and confirm their chief complaint and conduct a full slitlamp and ophthalmoscopy examination. We then review the results with the patient, advise them on treatment options (including IOLs if appropriate) and discuss steps for follow-up.

Step 4: Surgery review and schedule

Estimated time: 15 minutes
If cataract surgery is indicated, we will show the patient a brief video on risks, benefits and IOL options. Patients will also meet with surgical coordinators to go over consent documents and schedule an appointment for surgery.

Step 5: Optional same day A-scan

Estimated time: 30 minutes
A-scans are usually scheduled for another day. However, we make every effort to accommodate patients who request this service on the same day or who are traveling a significant distance.
