MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar across the membrane into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The water will flow in to the egg because the egg has 74% water and the vinegar has 95% water. Therefore, the high concentration vinegar will flow into the egg to make the low concentrated egg the same concentration as the vinegar outside. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.9 14.2 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300ml 275ml OBSERVATIONS *bubbles *water displaced 50ml *bubbles *squishy, foamy, chalky *floating, hollow *210ml after we took it out *floating *rubbery, squishy, feels like a water balloon *175 after we took it out

CONCLUSION In this lab we were investigating the effects of Osmosis by putting an egg in vinegar for 4 days. By day 4, our groups egg expanded 3.1cm. Compared to the 7th grade average, which was 2.7cm, our groups egg expanded 0.4cm more thsn the grade average. The water from the vinegar (higher concentration) floated across the selectively permeable membrane into the egg (lower concentrated). I hypothesized that the vinegar would flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS

What caused the eggshell to dissolve was the vinegar. The calcium carbonate from the eggshell and the weak acid from the vinegar combined formed a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction caused the calcium carbonate to dissolve exposing the selectively permeable membrane. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. The total expansion between the two eggs was 3.4 cm. The rate of group 3s egg (4.5cm) is 1.125 cm a day. Group 7s egg (1.1cm) is 0.275 cm per day. There are two discrepancies in the data. While 2.0cm - 3.0cm of growth are reasonable, two fall outside the range. The discrepancies could be due to a number of different reasons. Some of my theorys of why they are discrepancies are 1) The temperature could of affected the process of osmosis. It might have been to hot and osmosis didnt function properly or might have been to cold. 2) The water levels might not of ended up at the same number inside as out side. The egg could of not gotten enough water from the vinegar or too much water from osmosis. There are many reasons that this could of happened, but this is what I think happened. All cells need water because it is the main solution in everything. It keeps them clean and fresh. It also helps the cell keep its shape and water helps cells carry out life functions. Water is so important in everything, especially cells.
