Our reading strategy of the month is: Prior Knowledge

As you read with your child, talk with them about the information they may already know about the topic/ situation, so that they gain a deeper understanding of the book that they are reading.

We had another busy week in room 141. In math we have been working hard on number sense. We spent a lot of time working on making numbers with base ten blocks. We use the term rod for a ten and unit for a one. The kids used mats divided into tens and ones. I would give them numbers like 32, 53, 18, 48 and then they would build the number with their rods and units. They were really beginning to get the hang of it. Daily 5 routine continues to work out all of its kinks. One of the hardest things for the kids is listening to books on tape. Running a cassette player is really hard for kids. The whole rewind the tape is a hard concept compared to an I Pod!! In writing, we are working on a thank you note to the re department, lling out a story map about our trip to the re station, and writing in our science journal.

Science

The kids have gotten quite efcient at changing the mealworm food and water, and they are becoming more comfortable with touching the worms. However, not is everyone comfortable touching the worms, which is ne. We now have caterpillars in our classroom. We will watch the caterpillars grow into painted lady butteries. (Shhh, dont tell the kids that they will turn into a buttery!).

Conferences

Thank you to everyone who has signed up for conferences on volunteer spot. Please remember that conferences will take place on the following days, October 14, 17 and 21. Please let me know if you need a reminder of your time. This conference is just for parents. Your child will be invited to the spring conferences.

Fire Station Visit Food Drive

Our class had a wonderful visit to re station. One of the things that the remen encouraged the children to do with their family was to create an emergency exit plan in case of a re. Please take some time to talk about this as a family. Dont forget to plan a meeting area outside of your home in the event of a re.

Please take a minute to check your childs bee folder this week. You will nd a half a sheet of paper with information about our school food drive. I will try to remind you about the weekly requested items. The Verona High School students run this fundraiser.
