HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow from the vinegar through the membrane and into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the Diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized this because there is only 74% water inside the egg. There is 95% water in the vinegar. It will then slowly dissolve the eggshell and displace inside the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 3 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.5 15.5 15.6 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 250 240 220 220 200 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles begin to rise to the surface There was foam all around the egg and was squishy. It also grew by 1 centimeter All of the shell was gone. Grew 0.1 centimeters

CONCLUSION: In this lab, we tested the osmosis. We left the egg in 250 ml of vinegar for 4 days. The water molecules displaced from an area of high concentration, across the selectively permeable membrane and into an area of low concentration. This process expanded the egg 1.1 cm, 1.6 cm smaller than the 7th grade average. My Hypothesis was that water would flow into the egg and was 100% correct. ANALYSIS:

Vinegar is the cause because it is a weak acid that slowly dissolves the shell of the egg allowing the molecules to flow inside. Group 7s egg expanded 4.5 cm. Our groups (group 6) egg only expanded 1.1 cm. This could have happened because all 8 groups had different sized beakers where the amount of vinegar either would submerge the egg or leave the egg floating. Cells need water because it helps cool it and help with daily functions of all cells
