Oxidative phosphorylation is the production of ATP using the transfer of electrons for energy. Electrons from NADH pass through complexes I, III, and IV of the electron transport chain where protons are pumped across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This proton gradient drives ATP synthase to produce ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate.
