The Eye and Ear
Conjunctiva to protect the cornea Cornea to bend light (most of the bending takes place here) Iris adjusts the amount of light that enters the eye Pupil allows light to enter the eye Lens makes fine adjustments to focus light on retina Suspensory ligament attaches lens to ciliary body, alters the shape of the lens during accommodation Ciliary muscle alters the shape of the lens during accommodation Sclera protects eyeball
Functions continued
Choroid contains blood vessels that provide the eye with food and oxygen, prevents the reflection of light within the eye Retina contains light-sensitive cells - rods (for black and white vision) and cones (for colour vision) which absorb light and send information to the brain via the optic nerve Fovea the most sensitive part of the retina, only contains cones Blind spot it contains no light-sensitive cells, optic nerve leaves the eye here Optic nerve carries impulses from the retina to the brain
