Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 What is Chamilo?
ChamiloLMSisa learningmanagement system designedtosupporteffectiveonlineeducation
(often referred to as elearning). It is free software which has been developed through the
collaborationofvariouscompanies,organizationsandindividualsaccordingtoamodelknownas
opensource,butwithstricterethicalvalues.
ThismeansthatyouarefreetodownloadanduseChamilo,providedyouacceptitslicenseterms,
(detailedundertheGNU/GPLv3license1).Aslongasyouundertaketomaintainthem,thisconfers
fouressentialfreedomstoyou:thefreedomtouse,study,modifyanddistributethesoftware.

Chamilo is also supported by The Chamilo Association, a nonprofit organization whose key

1.5.1 Terminology
Atthetimeofwriting,Chamiloisbeingusedbyalmost six thousandorganizationsaroundthe
world,inmanydifferentlanguages,includingprimaryschools,colleges,highereducationinstitutes,
universities,NGOs,small,mediumandlargecompanies.
Obviously, all these bodies and institutions tend to use slightly differing terminologies. For
example, some institutions will call their courses Training sessions, others will call them
Learning spaces and others simply Courses. This presents challenges for the design of a

onesizefitsallelearningplatform(orevenuserguide),sowehavesoughtthemiddleroad,and
employasimple,universalterminologywhichwetrustwillmakesensetoallourusers.
