Grouping or repeated subtraction There are 6 sweets, how many people can have 2 sweets each?

Repeated subtraction using a number line Children will use an empty number line to support their calculation.

Children should also move onto calculations involving remainders.

Short division giving remainders as fractions & decimals. Children to give quotient as a remainder, as a fraction and for key equivalents as a decimal.

All remainders to also be expressed as a fraction. Answers for halves, fifths, tenths, quarters, hundredths also to be expressed as a decimal.

Children to move on round answers to one or two decimal places if required. Step 10 Division of decimals

Alternatively children could look to remove the decimal by multiplying the decimal by 10 or 100 etc. Then they use short division method, dividing the answers back by 10 or 100.
