Gonzalo Garza Independence High School

October 15, 2013 Dear Sir or Madam: I am delighted to write this letter on Juana Rochas behalf. Juana was a student in my English Language Arts III and IV classes from the Fall of 2012 through the Fall of 2013. Because I had the pleasure of teaching her in two courses, I was able to observe Juana grow as a student, a writer, and a young adult whom I admire and recommend highly for academic and employment opportunities. The English Language Arts courses at Garza High School are unique in that the material is project-based, the curriculum is self-paced, and the classes are multi-level. What this means is that at any one point in time, there are sophomores and seniors sitting next to each-other in the same class period, working independently, and discussing materials across these levels. Its not uncommon to have a senior present a multi-genre research project, a junior lead a discussion analyzing rhetoric in advertising, and a sophomore showcase a project exploring the archetypal Heros Journey all in one class period. This fosters learning across the grade level and sharing ideas. As Juana moved through the courses, she read challenging texts, engaged in research, analysis, argument and persuasion, poetry, and improved in both academic and creative writing skills. Juana is a skilled student who treats her work with a sense of maturity and responsibility beyond her years. She enjoys learning and succeeding, and puts her heart into whatever task is at hand. Juanas maturity and poise are evident when she speaks; she is not only considerate and thoughtful when discussing with her peers, she is particular when choosing her words, and therefore communicates respectfully and clearly. Her attitude towards her peers and teachers is always polite, and she treats others with the respect she wishes to receive. Presentation and class discussion may intimidate her, but she shines right through her fear. Along with Juanas academic skills, I observed growth and maturity in her social skills and responsibility during his time in my classroom. From the shy adolescent emerged an honest, selfdriven young woman who held a job and worked consistently outside of school, while determined to succeed and graduate early at the same time. While she occasionally floundered in the beginning with procrastination and motivation, she overcame these struggles. Today, I can count on her to do her work independently and without prompting, to find solutions to problems with little distraction, communicate when she needs help, and to help others in need. When she comes to a standstill and cannot continue without the help of myself or a teachers aide, she will work on the next project in order to get ahead, rather than waste time waiting for help.

As this student moves beyond her high school career into the next phase, I am sure she will take several things with her: an academic skill-set ready for higher education; a mature attitude and sense of readiness; and a desire to experience, express, and enjoy the opportunities that lie before her. She will be a wonderful addition to any classroom, team or group endeavor. I wholeheartedly recommend Juana Rocha for any academic or employment opportunities. Sincerely yours,
