About HEXTRAN
The HEXTRAN simulation program is part of the SIM4ME suite, a comprehensive simulation system intended to assist process engineers analyze and design all types of heat transfer systems. The complete spectrum of heat transfer design is included in HEXTRAN, from conceptual design with pinch analysis through the rating and design of exchangers and networks of exchangers. SIM4ME HEXTRAN includes full capabilities for representing process streams and for generating associated thermodynamic and transport properties. Steam and water phase behavior and the associated properties are retrieved from steam tables. The HEXTRAN GUI provides a Microsoft Windows graphical interface for the standard program. Only HTFS and HTRI members can use the HTFS and HTRI add-ons.

HEXTRAN Getting Started Guide HEXTRAN Keyword Manual HEXTRAN HTFS Input Guide
A complete set of online documentation in PDF format is provided for each product.
1-1
Hardware/Software Requirements
Client Hardware Intel Pentium II/III 300 MHz or above. 64 MB RAM and above (GUI only 32 MB RAM). 30 - 200 MB of free space. SVGA 800X600 minimum, 1024X840 recommended. Intel Pentium III 500 MHz or above. 128 MB RAM and above. 200 MB free space. Client: Windows 98/NT 4.0./2000/Millennium Server: Windows NT 4.0; Windows 2000.
1-2
Security
SIMSCI software requires the use of security for execution. Several security options are available.
Elan Security
SIMSCI provides an Elan security option on the Elan Server Application installation CD. The Elan License Manager is a third-party concurrent-user software licensing tool from Rainbow Technologies, Inc. SIMSCI has customized this client/server tool. Elan Server runs under Windows NT or Windows 2000. The server must have at least 5 MB of available disk space. To install Elan security, follow the instructions provided in the Elan Security Installation Guide included in the standard release package.
1-3
FLEXlm Security
SIMSCI provides a FLEXlm security option on the FLEXlm Server Application installation CD. The FLEXlm License Manager is a third-party concurrent-user software licensing tool from GLOBEtrotter Software, Inc. SIMSCI has customized this client/server tool. FLEXlm Server runs under Windows NT or Windows 2000. The server must have at least 5 MB of available disk space. To install, learn, and troubleshoot FLEXlm security, follow the instructions provided in the FLEXlm Security Guide included in the standard release package.
6.
To switch from Elan to Dallas security: 1. 2. 3. Open the HEXTRAN.ini file found in the USER directory. Find the section entitled [wss_Security] and change the type= line to read type=DSC. If the lines mode=SINGLE or Keydir= are present, comment them out by adding a semicolon at the front of the command line. Save the file and exit.
4.
1-4
To switch to FLEXlm security: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Install the FLEXlm software key. For more details, refer to the FLEXlm Security Guide. Open the hextran.ini file found in the USER directory. Find the section entitled [wss_Security] and set Type=FLXLM. Save the file and exit. Add the IPASSI_LICENSE_FILE=@{FLXLM server host name} environment variable to your control panel/system/environment settings. Reboot your computer to enable your security environment changes.
6.
HEXTRAN Installation
To install HEXTRAN, insert the CD and follow the installation prompts.
Installation Options
HEXTRAN can be installed in three configurations:
Full Installs both the SIM4ME client and server components. This includes: all HEXTRAN functionalities, IONA Orbix, Object Store PSE Pro, Sun Java Runtime and Microsoft SQL. Before you can run HEXTRAN, you must restart your computer. Setup asks whether you want to restart the system now or later. If you choose to restart the system later, be sure to restart it before you run HEXTRAN.
1-5
Testing HEXTRAN
Several test files are included with the application. To fully test your installation, run all the supplied problems. The test files are in the APPLIB directory under USER. To run the Target test problem, start a DOS box and type the following:
C: CD SIMSCI\SIM4ME10\APPLIB C:\PROGRAM FILES\SIMSCI\SIM4ME\HEXTRAN90\USER\RUNHX Target
Repeat this command, replacing the test file name, for each file you want to run.
1-6
Uninstalling HEXTRAN
Use the Add/Remove Programs function in the Windows Control Panel to uninstall HEXTRAN, HEXTRAN documentation, and the HTRI and HTFS modules. This does not remove user-created files. To uninstall HEXTRAN: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Click Start and select Settings/Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel options. Select SIM4ME. Click Add/Remove. Click Yes to confirm the deletion. A message may ask you whether to delete a shared file. 6. 7. If you know that the file is not used by another application, click Yes. Otherwise, click No. Repeat this procedure to uninstall the other components, which are listed in the Add/Remove Programs window as:

Installation Troubleshooting
Table 3-1: Installation Problems and Solutions Problem Solutions Security chip missing errors. The security device must be the first item in parallel port. Make sure that the security installation has been completed correctly and that you have the security device listed in the installation instructions. Make sure that the security device is firmly inserted into the parallel port. Check the 25 connector pins on the security device for damage. If a printer is attached, make sure it is turned on. Some laptop computers do not put out enough voltage to the parallel port to return an answer to the program. Test this by attaching a printer, turning it on, and executing the program. If it works with a printer attached, you can use that as a solution. You can also try moving the program to another computer or attaching just a cable at least two feet long to the printer side of the security device (no printer). If nothing works, contact Technical Support for a special battery adapter to increase voltage directly to the security device. Make sure only similar security devices are piggybacked. Problem The program is installed on a system running Windows NT. When you run the program, it produces errors relating to security. Ensure that the person who installed the program has system administration rights/privileges.
