7. Pre-requisite: EC - 331 8. Subject Area: DCC 9. Objective: To explain the theory of different types of antennas used in communication systems, and different mechanisms of wave propagation in free space.

10. Details of the Course: Sl. No. 1. Contents Fundamental Concepts: Physical concept of radiation, retarded potentials, Hertzian dipole; Antenna parameters: Radiation pattern, gain, directivity, effective aperture, and reciprocity; Radiation from dipoles of arbitrary length. Antenna Arrays: Arrays of point sources, endfire and broadside arrays, pattern multiplication, synthesis of binomial and DolphChebyshev arrays. Broadband Antennas: Log-periodic and Yagi antennas, frequencyindependent antennas, broadcast antennas. Aperture and Reflector Antennas: Huygens principle, radiation from apertures in an infinite ground plane, slot and horn antennas, parabolic reflector antennas. Printed Antennas: Radiation from rectangular and circular patches, feeding techniques. Wave Propagation: Ground wave, surface wave, and space wave propagation; Tropospheric and duct propagation; Structure of ionosphere and ionospheric propagation; Multipath fading, ray bending and other propagation phenomena; Indoor propagation.
