Lego by Andrew B. Myers

WE ARE ALL

R E ND C

ONS CTIO TRU N

Our generation is changing the world, changing the way we work, the way we communicate and how we do things all things. This spring, we explore the act of doing, building, creation, the work in progress and the materials we use. Emo, we know, but it needed to be said. On a brighter note, we want to be your sledgehammer. That project of yours wont do itself. Its all about rolling up your sleeves, hitting the Home Depot and getting your craft on. And if that is just way too much effort, you can always just play Jenga. So pull on those painting smocks and get to work.

N oticing something different ?

(Virtual) High-five, were turning 5 this year! For this occasion, Little Burgundy magazine has gotten a makeoverand baby, this aint no home-staging. Weve stripped it down to its foundations and built up from there. They say that bigger is better, so weve thrown in more of everything you love in a slightly larger bungalow. Stay tuned, we might dig a pool out back for the summer.

READ THESE NIKES

we take a closer look at our latest obsession: Nike.
You have only to look at the Air Yeezy 2s that sold for more than 90K on eBay last summer to know that Nike is one of the most sought-after brands in the world.
The company stays at the top of its game by constantly striving to conceive, develop, and produce The Next Big Thing while most sportswear brands are still bent over tying their laces. And thats pretty much always been the case. In fact, the brand was founded on the premise that it was possible to offer a better, more competitive sneaker than the bulky European trainers available in 1964. If you dont know the story, heres the Cliff Notes: University of Oregon track athlete Phil Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman joined forces to import and distribute running shoes from Japan, and Knight sold them from the back of his Plymouth. But Bowerman had been tinkering around with his own design ideas for years, and by 1972 the pair were ready to start manufacturing their own. With their now indelible swoosh logo created by a fellow U of O student, Nikes first hit was a shoe with a nubby sole that provided traction but were still relatively light. The inspiration? A waffle iron. And that was just the beginning. Since then, Nikes been slaying the competition. Nike Air Technology was introduced in 1979, before most of us were born. Nike Shox surfaced in 2001, and 2008 saw the trash talk shoe, made entirely out of industrial waste, proving that no sports brand is as synonymous with innovation and creativity as Nike. In 2013 Little Burgundy has something for everyone. Theres the Roshe*, a current fave neoprene and mesh, light and breathable, streamlined and slick. Or the Free*, designed to help strengthen the muscles of your feet. And the kicker? A gorgeous sneaker wedge (A.) for the ladies, proving that a pair of Nikes really can make you jump a little higher.

Sup Super?
we meet with the ultra cool eyewear brand to see whats up
When Daniel Beckerman, founder of Italian-based company retro.super.futur (also known as SUPER), first surveyed the vast landscape of eyewear designs on the market, he knew something was missing. He wanted to combine the fun, bright, vivacious styling of street wear labels with the same loving, old world artisanship and detailed construction of higher end fashion accessories.

LB FEATURES

WORDS BY

ralph katzenberg
IMAGES BY

maxyme g. delisle

By all counts he succeeded and the brand took off. Pretty soon SUPER found themselves doing high-profile collaborations with the likes of Kanye West, Elton John and French prt--porter label A.P.C. But regardless of their sudden success, theyve always stayed focused on their primary goal: creating fun and beautifully handcrafted sunglasses. Little Burgundy recently caught up with one of their designers to talk about their process.
LB

SUPER makes a point of letting people know your sunglasses are handmade in Italy, why is that important?

The computer plays an important role, but we actually dont use them as much as one would assume. Nowadays a lot of the research is done at the computer, merely because you have a whole universe at the tip of your fingers. But a big side of it still lies in first-hand experiences: travelling, touching, reading, learning, photographing and sharing storiesso we try to keep that in mind. Besides, its much more interesting to experience something in real life rather than be sitting in front of your computer day and night.

LB S

Making eyewear has been a big part of Italys industry for a long time. We Italians like to complain and say siamo un paese di vecchi (literally: this is a country of old people). We joke around about it, but unfortunately this is true, yet it taught us and brought us many great results. We are a country of old artisans, artisans that for the past centuries have been mastering many arts. We feel lucky to have the opportunity to make something we love in one of the countries that have a leading knowledge in the field. It makes us proud to work with Italian companies, helping each other out in the hard times, and celebrating our successes together.

Right, and that goes back to you doing things the old way. In Italy making eyewear is still considered an artisans job. Some of the factories we work with dont even have an email, and some of our prototypes are still entirely done by hand. Our work is still very hands-on. We dig through acetate colours and patterns, work on the materials until we obtain a certain touch to them, work on photographs or illustrations we would like to simulate or print on the sunglasseseven the selection of lenses is a very hands-on and creative process.

In general much of the design process has become computer-based, how much of your process involves drawing or working with your hands? Is that important to you?

JUST BEACHY
cultured kicks straight off the coast of spain
Inspired by the incredible people who flock to the maritime district of Barcelona and the creativity and uniqueness they bring with them, Maians shoes are a trademark of the laidback, urban-beach style. Completely handmade in Spain and blessed with strawberry-scented soles, the Maians brand (and the people behind it) is a legacy of the culture and vibrancy of their community. We spoke to Chad Weidmar, the Managing Director of the brand about what makes a shoe like this so engrained into the Spanish beachside lifestyle.
How do you take a lively and fun culture such as the Barcelonetas and turn it into a shoe?

It is all very emblematic of our city. You have retirees who spend winter days sitting in the sun playing dominoes and taking quick dips in the Mediterranean. While you also have the younger generation hanging out at local bars and cafs. It encapsulates one of the key characteristics of Maians: mixing traditional values with new trends.

We source and manufacture all of our products 100% in Spain, which as a bi-product helps to bring much needed work to the country. All of our shoe moulds are recycled; we build innovative designs into these pre-existing moulds. We also use primarily natural blend materials and we only use vulcanized and rubber soles. We are very proud of the workmanship of our shoemakers and their generations of experience.

LB

What textures and colours can we expect from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection? This seasons collection stems from a veritable melting pot of contrasts, colours, textures, smells and sounds. These contrasts are reflected in the materials, trimmings and laces of the shoes. Just like the pristine new buildings side-by-side with run-down houses, this seasons Maians are full of contrasts. The colour tone also reflects the Barceloneta buildings; beige with khaki, grey and brown, as well as flashes of teak, indigo, mustard and blue.

LB

It is so rare to find shoes made by hand in todays market. Tell me why this is so important to the Maians brand? Vulcanized shoemaking has its roots in the Rioja region of Spain. Our factories are the pioneers in this type of shoemaking and it is a very artisanal process. The shoes are handcrafted locally in Spain by the original "zapatilleros" who have shared the knowledge of creating these iconic walking shoes for nearly a century. It is important to our company because we believe that by maintaining the integrity of this process and keeping all of the elements produced locally we are creating a sustainable model and a quality product. Reviving "old" materials to give them a new lease of life has become a trademark in designing our modern shoes.

A.

LB

The company seems to be very eco-conscious - sourcing local materials for production and housing the shoes in reusable packaging.

Fixing the wobbly table

WORDS BY

kathryn borel jr.

Everyone hates a wobbly table. Wobbly tables are a horrifying reminder of the incredible fragility of the world we live in. A wobbly table screams, The infrastructure that you rely on to function properly as a human being is crumbling before your very eyes, do not trust any of it under any circumstance. In order to avoid spiraling uncontrollably into a mire of existential panic, we must fix the wobbly table! Heres how.

IDENTIFY THE SOURCE Identify the source of wobbliness by making sure the table is on a hard, even floor. Look at the legs. Sometimes the legs will have a round plastic thinger on the bottom. This is called a glide. If the glide is missing, go to the hardware store and buy a new one, you lazy sot!

OBTAIN A CORK If the wobble is coming from a shorter leg, obtain a cork. A cork is the thing that plugs up a wine bottle. Wine is a product made from fermented grapes.

SLICE IT! CLEAN IT! Take the cork and slice it with a sharp knife so that the piece of cork is the same width as the distance between the legs. Clean the foot of the leg with a brush or a cloth. Put a blob of wood glue on the cork, then press it into the leg. Your table is fixed now (probably.)

63

You might be looking at this article and thinking to yourself, But Kathryn, I dont even OWN a table. Maybe you are weeping because Ive reminded you that the last time you ate a bowl of soup, you did so on the couch and spilled it all over your nice pants. Well, its time to stop crying and make your own table out of garbage, you huge diaper baby. Its really easy.
STORE VISIT Scour your neighbourhood and maybe a home construction site or two. You are looking for an attractive door. You are also looking for two sawhorses, which you can steal from the site if you have a car and no scruples. I would also recommend just buying a couple from Home Depot. Theyre cheap.

ASSEMBLE Once you have found your door and stolen (bought) your sawhorses, assemble your table by placing the door on top of the sawhorses. There, now you have a beautiful, stately table for eating soup.

MAKE A SANDWICH Are you still crying because you dont know how to make soup? I cant help you there, bucko. Sorry. Time to make a sandwich.

Kathryns guide still got you scratching your head? Mr Fix Its DIY tutorials will come to the rescue. Littleburgundyshoes.com/mrfixit

I usually start with a flash of an idea. This will lead to a more structured analysis of this idea. It enters a log, and then maybe I'll doodle a sketch or two until a visual solidifies in my mind. At this point it's time to execute it. I haven't strayed too far from this pattern and I really like the evolution of it. I find it exciting.

Montreal and its cone epidemic

ning realization that the next seven months of your life will be spent worrying about whether or not the cones will cause you to be late for your dinner party, or lead you down a dead-end alley that has a bunch of impolite hobos at the end of it, or cause you to plough directly into the cardio room of the local YMCA. Oh man, then youll be even madder! Youll bang the steering wheel of your Hyundai and yell, This dinner party was my big chance to make a good impression on my boss, Dr. Zanzibar! You will wonder how you even became the type of person who works for a man with such a ridiculous name. Dr. Zanzibar? That has to be fake, right? No way is that real. Suddenly you will be in the alley, having followed a new set of lying cones to the end of it, and you will have parked your Sonata right next to a drum fire that is surrounded by hobos cooking cans of pork and beans. Youll roll down your window, pop your head out and plead, Hobos, could you spare a can of beans for a hungry person who has just certainly missed an 18-course dinner at Dr. Zanzibars house? The hobos will just laugh, and some will roll their yellowed eyes, and maybe a kind hobo will offer you a spoonful of beans or something, but another hobo will be all like, Dont waste your beans on a Hyundai driver with a boss whos probably the leader of a menacing crime syndicate! and the mean hobo will knock the spoon out of the nice hobos hands, and your face will be in such pain from the hot beans that you will slam the car into reverse, follow a new set of cones and smash your car into the Y. You wont kill anyone. No one is in the cardio room of the YMCA because theyre out taking walks and riding their bikes in the sunshine. But you will have to pay for the damage, and at this point Dr. Zanzibar has probably fired you for bailing on his dinner party, so youll have to find a new job. Luckily, its springtime, and there is a lot of work in construction.

Winter is over! Jack Frost is gone, and so is Bonhomme Carnaval. Bonhomme Carnaval is back in his luxurious ice cave, where he lives with his many provocatively dressed wives. No one knows where Jack Frost is, though there are rumours that Bonhomme might have killed him in a pagan ritual to usher in the Spring. None of this matters, because Spring is here thank you for the disposal, Bonhomme! and so are the beautiful, fresh things that come with it. Birds, flowers, your blinding white feet shoved prematurely into a pair of peep-toe sandals. And the ultimate symbol of genesis and renewal: orange construction cones. You will spit and swear at the sudden appearance of the cones. Youll say things like, drat or crumbs or DENTISTS!!!, all while spitting angrily out the window of your car, then feeling sort of bad when your spit hits a newly hatched baby bird thats fallen out of a nest and accidentally rolled onto the highway. But you wont think of that saliva-covered baby pigeon for long because your attention will have gone back to the cones, and the daw-
