Nick Maloy MusEd 356 Choral Methods I

Structuring a Musical Choral Rehearsal Demorest, Steven M. January, 1996

Demorests article, like many others concerning music, focuses on the idea that rehearsal time must be used wisely. In order for this to happen, it is important that the choral educator properly prepares for and sequences their rehearsal time. I found it especially helpful how Demorest broke down his sequencing ideas in to the simplest parts. For example, deciding on a starting point for rehearsal and what order to teach parts in, etc. By doing this the choral director can make sure that they maximize the productiveness in the time allotted to them for class or rehearsal. As a choral singer, I notice when someone is not properly prepared for a choral rehearsal or does not have a fluid sequence for the goals they wish to accomplish. Therefore it is important to remember this as a teacher. Poorly structured rehearsals are not only a waste of the directors time, but the students as well. I plan on referencing this article when thinking about how to structure my own choral rehearsals in the future. I hope that by using some of the ideas the Demorest gives, I will be able to make the best use of time during rehearsals, making sure them my students leave them having had an optimum experience.
