Guidelines for the final project in PHY453/553 The goal of the project is to prepare a user proposal for nanoscience

research user facility. Before you start you would need to define what experimental study you would like to undertake and what is the final goal of the research.

The proposal has to utilize at least 3 different fabrication methods and 4 different nanoscale characterization methods (these could be either the ones that we covered in class or others available at the user facility).

The idea is to put together a research proposal that addresses a nanoscience problem. The write-up should consist of a title, author, ~100-word abstract, and min of two-page narrative with relevant references. The narrative should include: 1. brief introduction to the problem you propose to study and review of relevant literature regarding the problem (3 citations minimum); 2. the physics/chemistry/materials issues you would like to address and why it is so important that you should get a valuable user time at the nanocenter; 3. describe fabrication methods you would use and what you expect to obtain after each step; 4. describe characterization methods you would use and what info you expect to obtain; 5. brief conclusion

After the article list the exact tools that you would utilize at the nanocenter, for example if using AFM and there are several AFM tools at the center specify which one would you use (ambient or UHV or one that is has some specific spectroscopy capabilities). Extra Credit Question: Describe the basic physical principles behind the ferroelectric control of spin polarized tunneling in the paper by Garcia et al, Science 327 (2010) 1106. a page answer should be sufficient to clearly outline the principle.
