COURSE OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to examine how information technology enables organizations to conduct business in radically different and more effective ways. The commercialization of the Internet has created a seismic change in the business environment. New channels of supply and distribution are emerging. New electronic marketplaces and exchanges are being created. The infrastructures of firms and the industries within which they operate have been permanently altered. From the textbook perspective, the course will be organized into four main modules with the following goals:

Build an understanding of the impact of information technology on industries and markets. We will discuss strategic positioning and opportunities to alter market/industry structure, power, and relationships. Explore new organizational capabilities, management/leadership principles, and sources of value that arise within networked companies. Examine approaches to designing and managing open-standard, networked technology infrastructures. Examine issues arising as business executives, IT executives, users, and IT partners work together to leverage technology to create a sustainable advantage.
