CONDITIONAL SENTENCES/ SUBJUCTIVES

BASIC USAGE

1. What is always true: PRESENT + PRESENT

If I work late, I get tired Its always the same! If I decide to leave the office early, my boss calls me after Ive left!

2. What was always true: PAST+ PAST

If it was snowing, we stayed at home In those days, if you had a job, you were lucky

3. Real situations: PRESENT + FUTURE. Here we think the outcome is really possible
If you keep driving like that, youre going to have an accident If you see Mark, tell him Ill ring him tomorrow

4. Hypothetical situations: PAST + WOULD. These are unreal or imaginary situations

If I knew the answer, Id tell you If I was having a party, I wouldnt invite my boss!

5. Hypothetical past situations: PAST PERFECT +WOULD HAVE

These refer to past events If I had known you were coming, I would have met you at the station. Now were lost! If you had written down Marys directions this wouldnt have happened.

6. Past events with results in the present: PAST PERFECT +WOULD

If Jim hadnt missed the plane, he would be here now

7. IF ONLY. This adds emphasis to the hypothetical situation. With past events it adds a sense of regret
If only I had enough time! If only I hadnt drunk too much, this wouldnt have happened!
