2. Cohesion Since this is a formal chronological narrative, the student needs to make major use of reference, and a reasonable amount of ellipsis. Since this is a historical and not a fictional account, the use of substitution should not be required. Reference For example - He wrote for his third symphony in 1805. He called it Eroica He is an anaphoric reference for Beethoven, and it is an anaphoric reference for the third symphony There will be many exophoric references since this is a factual piece. Cataphoric references are unlikely, since this is an intermediate piece
Ellipsis For example He wrote his 7th Symphony in 1812, whilst he wrote his 8th a year after The second, subordinate clause ellipses Symphony.
3. Coherence To be able to tell themselves that the text is coherent. To know that there is a consistency within subject matter of the lexis used.
Used to describe the student to describe the achievements or give their opinions about whom they are writing about.
5. Conjunctions Extensions: then/and then/and after that/and afterwards/so/because The learner will, after all, be constructing a sequence of events and so will need to keep the narrative flowing
