List and describe two (2) characteristics of a successful secondary physical education program as discussed in Chapter 1. Be prepared to share your responses in class. 1. Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. This standard for Physical Education explains the importance in understanding and performing the skills necessary to participate in various activities. Every student needs to understand the correct way to perform a skill before jumping right into the activity. This can be done by breaking students up into groups in order to practice the skill with several repetitions. A great example that the book used was a volleyball bump. This is a skill used in the game of volleyball in order to hit the ball in a controlled fashion either over the net or to a player on the same team. Once each student practices the bump, the class can transition what they learned into a game later on. 2. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. This standard for physical education describes the different values that students put into physical education. The students can benefit from a physical education class by having fun, challenging themselves to do better, interact with other students, and improve overall personal health. Each student may find a different benefit than others, but every student will gain something from physical education. People from different backgrounds or areas may have different

perspectives on fitness and education, and that is what they may base their curriculum off of those beliefs. Some may feel the need to have students simply stay healthy, and others may want their students to understand and challenge themselves to get better.
