Common Core/ NM Content Standards: Craft and Structure RI.9-10.4 Determine the meaing of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative and technical meanings, analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choice son meaning and tone. Literacy W.9-10.2 Write texts to examine and convey complex ideas.

Essential Question(s): What is the meaning of Pathos, Logos and Ethos? How do these concepts relate to advertising?

Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.):

Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Ask students about their reactions to ads what kinds of ads attract them, what kinds of ads repel them. Ask if they can identify the devices in ads that lure consumers. Resources/Materials Prezi Presentation Teacher:

Students: Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes?) Daily: Do Now checks for understanding of the previous days lesson. Written assignments and quizzes check for understanding of daily lessons. This Week: Students will write an email using logos, pathos and ethos, to persuade me, their teacher, to give them an extension on an assignment; students will take a quiz on advertising terms. WEDNESDAY Learning Target- Students will show comprehension of terms logos, ethos and pathos by writing a email to me using all three devices.

Assignment(s) DueStudents will watch a Prezi Presentation on logos, ethos and pathos and complete a writing assignment to show they understand the terms.

THURSDAY Learning Target-Students will demonstrate understanding of various advertising strategies by correctly labeling the types strategies used in ads they watch.

Assignment(s) DueStudents will take notes on various advertising strategies. Students will watch videos of ads and try to identify the techniques being used in each ad. Students will take a quiz on advertising tactics Assignment(s) DueStudents will fill out a questionnaire to understand the text and subtext of an ad. Students will fill out a graphic organizer that describes several traits of a specific target audience. Students will create an ad designed to appeal to this target audience.

FRIDAY Learning Target- Students will apply their knowledge of advertising strategies by bringing in an ad and asking basic deconstruction questions to understand the target audience for the ad. Students will then apply their knowledge of advertising strategies by designing an ad for a specific target audience.
