Daily Lesson Plan for Student Teachers

Teacher: Date: Cathrine Tunstall Time : Subject: Language Arts Plan approved by: Grade: Third

Behavioral Objective(s): The student will be able to distinguish the difference between simple and compound sentences. The students will also be able to create their own compound sentences.

Pennsylvania State Academic Standard(s):

Materials and/or Equipment: Sentence strips glue words Chalkboard Container

Modifications for Individual Differences: The teacher will designate a peer buddy to guide the learner.

Activities and Procedures: Anticipatory Set: We are going to play a game called, Sentence Scramble to practice making compound sentences. First, lets begin by talking about how a compound sentence is formed. What needs to be present to make the sentence compound? Answer: conjunction (glue words holds the sentences together). Can anyone tell me a few different conjunction words? Now I am going to write two sentences on the board and I want one of you to tell me the one that is a correct compound sentence. Sentence 1: Katie completed her homework and she put it in her binder. Sentence 2: My pencil is broken I borrowed one from the teacher.

Lesson Sequence: I would like you to get into groups of four. Then, I will come around to each group and have 2-group members select one sentence and one glue word from these containers. One person from each group stand up and you will be the recorder, which means you write down the sentences your group comes up with. The teacher will now go to each group and have them select their sentence strips and two glue words from the designated bins. Now that everyone has the materials. I am going to give you **two** minutes to come up with as many compound sentences as you can. On the count of three, you may begin 1,2,3. Go! As the students complete the game I will walk around the room to be sure they are on the right track. If any group shows signs of not understanding, I will offer helpful hints. The last person in the group will be the presenter and when the two minutes are up I will have each presenter tell me the sentences they came up with.

Closure: Each group will then be asked to present their information. The group that has come up with the most correct compound sentences will be the winner.

Evaluation: The students will be evaluated on the material that is presented from the group activity.

Assignments: Study for the assessment they will have the following day.
