Canal Towpath/Lock Street to Shawmont


Rehabilitate existing 2.2 miles recreation path from Lock Street to Shawmont. 2 stone screenings for the majority of the path. Repairs to the sub-base. 8-10 wide. Porous asphalt transitions at bridges. Boardwalk/bridge north of Cotton Street to Green Lane remains (small area of stone screenings connecting two areas).

New concrete block retaining wall just south of Leverington Street with 200 of porous asphalt. Medium to dark gray in color. 30 high by 12 wide. This will replace older existing timber wall.

Bridge repairs All bridges to be repaired are northwest of Leverington. 4 bridges will repaired by replacing decking and posts/rails. Bridge #1: south of Fountain Street (wooden pier just off Fountain to remain). Bridge #2: north of Fountain Street

Bridge repairs Bridge #3 & Bridge #4 near ruins of Locktenders House/wetlands towards Shawmont. Repair and replacement of existing fence railing along pathnear upper lock of Canal.

Porous asphalt from end of towpath near ruins of Shawmont Pumping Station to Nixon Street/SEPTA tracks. Post/rail fence. Will follow recently constructed PWD access roadnot cobblestones, which will remain. Bollards/signs Erosion and sedimentation controls

Part of the 108 mile Schuylkill Navigation system built between 1815-1828. 62 miles of canals and locks and 46 miles of slackwater on sections pooled behind the dams. Contributed to the overall economic development of Philadelphia and Manayunk by making available the vast resources of the anthracite coal region.

Primary reasons for dredging: --environmental/ecological health of waterways. --possibility for recreation Primary areas to be dredged --Area between Flat Rock Dam and Lock 68 --2 silt islands located downstream.
