James Purdys Some of These Days Music by Ryan Cox and Michael Snyder

Celebrating The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy

To celebrate a publishing event, Norton/Liveright's The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy, with an introduction by filmmaker John Waters, Ryan Cox and Michael Snyder will perform live music accompanying a recording of Purdy reading his subversive story Some of These Days. James Purdy (1914-2009), a novelist, playwright, and poet, was one of Americas greatest but most under-read authors. He was acclaimed by literary luminaries from Langston Hughes to Tennessee Williams to Jonathan Franzen. A religious allegory of sorts, Some of These Days was the last thing that Tennessee Williams ever read: Purdys manuscript was found by his deathbed. Dr. Snyder, a Professor of English at Oklahoma City Community College, and Mr. Cox, an OCCC alumnus who is completing a degree at OSU, will be using electric guitars and effects units to create an atmospheric backdrop for Purdys quest narrative. James Purdy, who grew up in Ohio, spent time in Chicago and Wisconsin before living almost fifty years in Brooklyn Heights, where he wrote his powerful fiction, also acclaimed by Dorothy Parker, Edward Albee, Gore Vidal, and many more.
