Physical Education Instructor: Mr.

Sullivan Course: Physical Education Year & Semester: 2013, Semester 1 Text & Materials: North Boone PE shirt and shorts. Students must also have athletic shoes or running shoes on a daily basis. Dress shoes, flip flops or boots are unacceptable and will result in a no dress for the student. Description: This class will introduce students to physical fitness as well as many different sports. We will concentrate on an activity for a two to three week period followed by a test on that sport or activity. Throughout regular participation the student will realize the value of active involvement in sports and receive instruction in sports and methods of maintaining fitness, which will have the potential to improve their adult life. Course Expectations: Be on time, prepared and ready to participate. State Goals: STATE GOAL 19: Acquire movement skills and understand concepts needed to engage in health-enhancing physical activity. STATE GOAL 20: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness based upon continual self assessment. STATE GOAL 21: Develop team building skills by working with others through physical activity. STATE GOAL 22: Understand the principles of health promotion and the prevention and treatment of illness and injury. STATE GOAL 23: Understand human body systems and factors that influence growth and development. STATE GOAL 24: Promote and enhance health and well-being through the use of effective communication and decision-making skills. Unit targets: 1. The students will display good sportsmanship during play in victory or defeat. 2. The students will utilize the concept of teamwork during play. 3. The students will demonstrate behavior that is consistent with safe guidelines as outlined by the teacher. 4. The students will be sensitive to the differences in physical ability levels of other students. 5. The students will be able to identify sport specific rules and strategies for each unit. Vocabulary: This list represents a list of words that are used when discussing the variety of focus and subject matter in physical education class. Aerobic, anaerobic, attitude, behavior, calories, cooldown, cooperation, diet, endurance, exercise, fairness, flexibility, heart rate, honesty, jumping jacks, perspiration, physical fitness, physical fitness test, practice, pulse, pushups, run, sit ups, stretch, walk, and warm-up. Evaluation/Grading Policies: All students will be graded using a rubric in physical education class. Each day of PE class is worth 10 points. punctuality, attitude, effort, and dress/participation. If all of these expectations are met for that day, 10 points are awarded. It is possible to receive anywhere from 0-10 points per day. For example, if a student is late to class without an excuse, he/she will lose a point for that day. PARTICIPATION Students must dress appropriately for PE (athletic shoes, North Boone t-shirt, sweatpants/shorts, etc.) AND participate actively for the entire class period in order to receive full credit for that day of class. Make-up work Students will be allowed to make up an excused absence. An absence excused or not results in a 0 out of 10 for that day. To make up the points for an excused absence a student can write a report on any sports or health topic of their choice. The paper must be at least on page written. Or a student can come to the weight room in the morning before school and either workout with weights or use the aerobic equipment for a minimum of 50 minutes. Students who choose to come in before school to use the weight room must be dressed in their PE uniform and athletic shoes.
