Value Stream Mapping g is a pencil-and-paper tool that helps you see the flow of information and materials as a product makes its way through the value stream. VSM ties together lean concepts and forms the basis of an implementation plan. It helps you identify how best to coordinate product build with customer orders.

The basic philosophy of Kaizen is to involve all employees in small daily improvements in their work areas. Kaizen events are used to identify and execute multiple Kaizen improvements within 3-5 days. Kaizen follows the PDCA or Plan-Do-Check-Act process.

Errorproofing p g begins g with the belief that ANY process can be made completely error-free. Errorproofing (also known as mistakeproofing or poka-yoke) is the removal of all potential causes of error either through design, process or mistakeproofing devices. The goal is for machines, material and people to always get it right the first time.

A place for everything and everything in its place. Visual management is a method in which clear visual tools signs, labels, colors, markings are used to control and simplify work processes. Visual management makes it easy to see anything that is not normal waste, instability, etc. so that it can be addressed.

In a Kanban or pull system, parts are only built when the downstream customer orders them. Kanban cards or other highly visible signals are used to communicate process demand upstream. The goal of once piece/small lot flow is to the reduce the quantity (lot size) for each step in the process to ONE or the absolute practical minimum.

Every process on the plant floor can be described by standardized work. With standardized work, the assembly process becomes predictable, repeatable, consistent and stable. Standardized work is the baseline for all Kaizen activities. It is required to tell you where you are, where you want to go, and how you are going to get there.

The chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The Theory of Constraints is a system philosophy which identifies the weakest link (constraint) and improves it. Once the weakest link is improved, overall system performance is improved until the next weakest link is discovered. Two types of constraints are: 1) Physical and 2) Policy or Procedure.
