1314lab - Mole Quantities Lab With Corrections
Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 3. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. First mass the zinc. Second use the water displacement method to find the volume of the zinc. Then covert the mass of the zinc into number of atoms, by first converting it to moles and then using avergauders number to convert to number of atoms. Because the amount of atoms found is for 3cm2 one can divide the amount of atoms by 3 to find the amount of atoms per 1cm2. Then multiply that answer by 2 to find the amount of atoms in 2cm2 of zync.
5. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper A. First mass the copper. Second measure the length of the copper wire. Next convert the mass of the copper wire into moles. This gives the number of mols per the length of the wire (9.19cm). Next cross multiply to find how many centimeters are needed for 2 moles of copper.
