10: TexturesArt Triangle Classroom Shelby Nickel This activity targeted the older children in the classroom. The developmental objective was to experiment with unfamiliar textures and the sensations that go along with them. The first day of this activity, the children each had a piece of cardboard off of which they could pull the top layer to reveal the corrugated surface underneath. The next two days, the children used various textured art materialstape, markers, colored glue, and collage materialsto decorate their cardboard. All of the older children in the classroom participated in this activity and completed some aspect of it all three days it was available. Marlowe (30 months) completed foundation P.5.2isolates one or two fingerswhile using scissors to cut and pull the top layer off of her cardboard. She told the teacher that she wanted to use the scissors to cut the cardboard instead of pulling it with her fingers.

Matthieu (32 months) demonstrated FA.1.50 delight in touch and feel of materials rather than what is being producedwhen he used his fingers to feel the holes in the honeycomb cardboard. Instead of using all of the art materials available to decorate his cardboard, Matthieu spent most of his time using his sense of touch to explore his art project. Matthieu completed the developmental objective by exploring the texture of the corrugated cardboard.

Sam (37 months) completed foundations P.5.2 and FA.1.55show individuality in artwork. He used two fingers of his hand to hold a marker and draw on a piece of masking tape. He was also the only child in the classroom to put tape on his cardboard and then color on top of the tape.
