SessionContext Basedonanobservationtakenon*Francescawhoaskedmetomakeanenvelopeforherso shecouldpostherlettertheweekbefore.Ialsonoticedthatafewoftheotherchildrenhad beenwritingletterstoo.Ithoughtthisactivityfollowedonwellfromtheinterestsandalso helpedtoextendthembyintroducingthepostingoftheletterstheyhadcreated.This activitywillbecarriedontonextweeksothatallthechildrenhaveachancetomakealetter andtheneachletterwillbegivenbacktothechildrenduringgrouptime. SessionFocus Iwouldlikethechildrentodeveloptheirdrawingandwritingskillsbyaskingchildrento createtheirownletterandwritetheirnamesontheirenvelope.Iwouldalsoliketo encouragecreativitybypromotingindividualityinthecreationoftheirletters,tellingthe childrentheycandrawanythingtheywouldlikeusingthetextasandpaperprovided.I wouldliketofamiliarisethechildrenwiththeconceptofpostingletterswhichIwilldoby firsthavingadiscussionwiththemaboutletters,whethertheyhavesentthembefore,who theysendthemtoandwheretheygotosendthemandhowtheysendthem.Iwillusethe propofabox,paintedredwithpostwrittenonitinwhiteletterstointroducethemtothe ideaofapostbox. TeachingandLearningStrategies Introduction (approxtime:15minutes) 1.Discusspostingwithchildrenusingthesequestions: Haveyousentaletterbefore? Whodoyousendlettersto?i.e.Nanna,Papa,cousins,aunts,uncles,dad,mum... Doyouevergotothepostofficewithyourparents? Haveyoueverseenthepostiedeliveringthemail? Haveyoueverseenapostboxbefore? Doyouknowwhereyougotosendaletter? Doyouknowhowtosendaletter? 2.Makingletters(approxtime:30minutes): askchildrentomaketheirlettersbydrawingorwritinganythingtheywouldlikeandalso tothinkaboutwhotheywouldliketosendtheirletterto. Askchildrentowritetheirownnameontheirletter. 3.Puttingletterinenvelope(approxtime:10minutes): wheneachchildhasfinishedaskthemtocomeandgetanenvelopeandputtheirletter inside,thengivethemapieceofstickytapetosealit.Finallyaskthemtowritetheirname ontheenvelope. Conclusion (approxtime:10minutes) Finallyeachchildtakestheirlettertothepostboxandputsinthroughtheslot. (Takephotosofthemwiththeirbacktoyoupostingtheirownlettertorecordtheactivity) Reflections/Evaluation Thechildrenreallyenjoyedthisactivitytheywereveryexcitedtoposttheirlettersand theywerealsoproudtoshowoffwhattheyhaddrawnorwritten.Theymetthelearning outcomesbycooperatingwellwitheachother,meandbycreatingtheirownletters,writing theirownnamesandindependentlypostingtheirletter.Ifeelthisactivitycouldbefollowed upbyorganisinganexcursiontothepostoffice,toactuallyseewhathappensbehindthe desk,suchasmailsortingandpostingandtotalktosomepostmen.Theactivitycouldalso befollowedupbyusingmoreresourcessuchasbooksaboutlettersandthepostanda postmanpatDVD.Thiscouldbearegularactivitywheretheywriteletterseachweekand ultimatelyinsteadofwritingalettertothemselves,writeittoaclassmate.Toimprovethis activityIwouldincludeastoryaboutlettersbeforeundertakingtheletterwritingandalso haveadiscussionwiththechildrenaboutwhatgoesonthefrontoftheenvelope,for examplestampsandaddresses.
