RADAR
RADIO DETECTION AND RANGING

HISTORY
The term RADAR was coined in 1941 by the United States Navy as an acronym for Radio Detection And Ranging.
Radar was secretly developed by several nations before and during World War II.

INTRODUCTION
Radar is an object-detection system which uses radio waves to determine the range, altitude, direction, or speed of objects.

The radar dish or antenna transmits pulses of radio waves or microwaves which bounce off any object in their path. The object returns a tiny part of the wave's energy to a dish or antenna which is usually located at the same site as the transmitter.

PRINCIPLE OF RADAR
Transmitter emits radio waves in predetermined directions.

When these come into contact with an object they get reflected or scattered.

They get reflected by good conductivity materials especially

by sea water, wetland.

The signals received by the receiver of the radar help in

determining the desired quantity.

DOPPLER EFFECT
Ground based radar systems used for detection rely on Doppler effect. The apparent frequency of the wave changes with the relative position of the target.

APPLICATIONS OF RADAR
1.ARMED FORCES

2.MARINE RADAR

3.WEATHER FORECASTING

RADAR GUNS TO MONITOR VEHICLES
