Process control

Introduction
Control objectives

Why

control ?
To run plant!

Every engineer needs basic knowledge about control.

How to drive the chemical process

Control Objectives:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Product quality Profit Equipment safety Formal safety Environmental protection Smooth operation

1.Product quality

Adjust product concentration to achieve quality

5.Environmental safety

Smooth operation-production rate

Keep material flow smooth

Control objectives must be achieved. Failure to do so will lead to unsafe plant with no quality product and profit

All process Parameters are set!

Why control ?

No steady state processes, but dynamics!

Suppress external disturbances Ensure stability of operation Optimize performance

This plant does not operate at steady state conditions: Input feed and steam temperatures, flow rate in and out change with time

This plant is controlled Level and ToC remain at desired set values.

Determine one example for each control objective categories.
