10-23-13 Thursday Decoding-Word Block Common Core Standard: 2.RF.3d Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.

Learning Objective: The student will be able to identify and select words that include th, wh, ph, sh, and ch. E.Q: What does the th, wh, ph, sh, and ch say? Materials: The H Brothers Word Hunt worksheet Sound cards Tape Prefix flipchart Fly swatters White board (per student) Dry erase marker (per student) Eraser (per student) Assessment: The student will complete The H Brothers Word Hunt. Activities/Procedures: Opening: The students will play the Fly Swat Game on the Promethean Board. The teacher will put up a page, and the students will be given a few seconds to look at the words. The teacher will two number sticks out of the jar. The students whose numbers were called will come up to the board. The teacher will call out a word, and the students must fly swat the word that the teacher said. The student that fly-swatted the word first will say the word aloud. The students will continue until all the words have been said on the page. The teacher will call up 3 or 4 pairs of students. Activities: The students will go around the room and record the words that include the sounds with th, wh, ph, sh and ch on The H Brothers Word Hunt worksheet with a partner. The words are taped around the room. Students will go back to their desk when the timer goes off. The students will say two words off of their list to a partner. The students will place their papers in the middle of the table, and the teacher will collect them. Closing: The students will take out their white boards, dry erase marker, and eraser. The student will write a sentence using one of the th, wh, ph, sh and ch words. Development of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: What beginning sounds do you need more help with?
