Topic: Poetry Class Title & Period: Language Arts Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to write a simple rhyming poem. Common Core State Standards: 3.W.4 With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose. Opening Remarks: How was everyones morning? Anticipatory Set: Have students sit in front of the classroom Indian style. What do High, bye, and sky have in common? Body of Lesson: (Modeling, Guided Inquiry, Guided Practice, Independent Practice): Modeling Read poems aloud by Shel Silverstein that have the rhyming pattern ABAB Have students raise hands when they hear a rhyming pair Write rhymes on board Look at rhyming word list Ask students for more words that rhymed with the ones they already have Guided Inquiry Write my own poem on board Ask students to pay attention to where rhyming words are located (1 and 2, 3 and 4) Underline rhyming words Explain how this is a way to write poems Guided Practice Come up with poem as a class that use ABAB pattern Independent Practice Students create a poem using the same ABAB pattern Closing Set (So what?)
