Loveday Investigating Attitudes Toward Older Adults Societys attitudes toward the aging process and older adults have generally been described by researchers as mixed. That is, people associate both positive and negative stereotypes with aging. Dr. Robert Butler first coined the phrase age-ism back in 1969 to describe the negative attitudes expressed by many toward older adults. In this activity you will investigate the attitudes of your peers toward older adults and develop a bit of experience in conducting hands-on research!

STEP 1: In the coming days you will ask four people (if fellow students, preferably those not enrolled in AP Psychology) the first three terms or words that come to mind when they hear the term old person. Also, you should record the age of the person being interviewed. STEP 2: Assemble a list of the responses you received and the frequency of any terms that appeared more than once.
