Teacher Candidate: Trikia Spaulding Lesson # 2 Subject/Grade: ELA/6th-8th Date and Time of Lesson: Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify the theme of a piece of literature. Alignment with Standards: SC-ALT extended standards K-1.1: Summarize the main idea and details from literary texts and texts read aloud. SC-ALT extended standards 1-1.1: Summarize the main idea and supporting evidence in literary text during classroom discussion. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: These objectives are appropriate because students will need to develop and evolve their reading comprehension skills by identifying the literary elements in a piece of literature. This will help students as they advance in their education. This foundation of reading comprehension will increase the students ability to comprehend informational text. Present the topic of lesson through a video called Flocabulary - Five Things (Elements of a Short Story). 2. Follow up questions to ascertain previous knowledge and attentiveness to video. a. What are the five things you want to look for in a story? b. What were some examples given in the video? 3. Establish the focus on Theme by discussing what theme is and how it is different from the other elements. 4. I then read aloud Apples and Pumpkins. 5. I hand out individual copies of the text Apples and Pumpkins and worksheet (to be completed later) 6. Students are then instructed to number paragraphs (as they do in usual instruction) so they can identify the piece of text they get their answer from for the worksheet later presented. 7. I then instruct student to follow along using their pointer finger as a guide. 8. We then read aloud Apples and Pumpkins together. 9. Students are then presented with a Worksheet containing a short answer question, multiple choice, and bubble chart all pertaining to the theme of the text Apples and Pumpkins. 10. The students then begin to complete worksheet with prompts from myself and are given assistance when needed or required. 11. Collect student work sheets and individual text.

Activity Analysis: (must support TWS 3 and show use of TWS 1 data) This lesson supports the needs and characteristics of the students by providing guided instruction. Majority of the students in this classroom setting struggle with reading and writing without prompts or teacher assistance. This lesson provides them with exposure to leveled text where the theme of the story is not easily apparent. Students must comprehend words and information given in text to inference the theme of text. The technology used in this lesson is the promethean board. I choose to use this in this lesson because it is used throughout the students regular instruction and is a great tool to communicate instruction to whole class.
