he attempt to put Khao Yai National Park, which is part of
Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, in the list of UNESCOs

add Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex to UNESCOs World

Natural Heritage List by the criteria:

World Natural Heritage Sites began in 1990. By 2003, Thailand has

revived the attempt again by nominating the whole Dong Phayayen
Jungle which comprises Khao Yai, Thap Lan, Pang Sida, Ta Phraya
national parks, as well as Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary.
In the 29th Session of the World Heritage Committee, taking place
in Durban, Republic of South Africa, had agreed on July 14, 2005, to

possessing great biological diversity, in both number of species

and habitat that plays important role for the in situ conservation.
processing endemic species that play key role for the in situ
conservation
proessing the endangered species list.

Dong Phayayen-Khoa Yai Forest complex acquires total area of 6,152.13 square kilometres, covering part of Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok,
Nakhon Ratchasima, Prachinburi, Sa Kaeo and Burirum. Its western edge borders Banteay Chmor protected landscape, Kingdom of Cambodia.
Rich in biological diversity, this large forest complex originates 5 important rivers. Its reverine forest is a unique ecosystem which remains in
quite a limited area in Thailand.

Outstanding value of the

Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex

Hydrology
Rainfall in the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex ranges
between 1,000-3,000 millimetres per annum, playing important role in
filling up water sources. The important rivers namely Nakhon Nayok,
Prachinburi, Lam Takhong, Muak Lek, and Mun River that nourish
communities in Central and Northeastern Region are all originated
from the forest complex.

Biological diversity
The Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex is rich in ecosystem
diversity namely tropical evergreen forest, hill evergreen forest,
tropical evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest, and dry dipterocarp
forest. Furthermore, there are grassland, limestone mountain, and
reverine forest dotting around. As a result, Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai
Forest Complex contains great variety of flora and fauna. It houses
one sixth of plant species found in Thailand, or 2,500, out of 15,000
species. Among these, 16 of them are endemic species.
The site is home to 805 species of fauna, namely 112 mammal
species, 392 species of birds and 205 reptiles and amphibians, 9 of
which are rare species namely Asian Giant Softshell-Turtle
(Pelochelys cantorii), Western Four-clawed Gekko (Gehyra lacerata),
Sandstone Gekko (Gekko petricolus), Phuwa's Lizard (Mantheyus

phuwaensis), Western Legless Skink (Isopachys borealis), Korat

Slender Skink (Riopa koratense), Korat Blind Snake (Typhlops khoratensis), Siamese Crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) Among these
wildlife that have international value, three of them are endangered
species including Asiatic Elephant (Elephus maximus), Tiger
(Panthera tigris), Banteng (Bos javanicus) The vulnerable species
living in the site include Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca nemestrina),
Stump-tailed Macaque (Macaca arctoides), Pileated Gibbon
(Hylobates pileatus), Cnestless Himalayan Porcupine (Hystrix
hodgsoni), Asian Wild Dog (Cuon alpinus), Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus
thibetanus), Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), Gaur (Bos gaurus),
Serow (Capricornis sumatraensis), Pale-capped Pigeon (Columba
punicea), Siamese Fireback (Lophura diardi), Green Peafowl (Pavo
muticus) and Masked Finfoot (Heliopais personata).

Tourism and study

Escarpment of its the western edge is a remarkable natural
phenomenon that creates unique landscape. Khao Yai National Park,
which has the most rugged mountain and the highest rainfall, feeds
lots of streams and waterfalls that attraction millions of visitor in each
year. Dong Phayayen, which is one of the countrys richest natures,
