VISUALISER LESSON PLAN – AQUARIUS TUITION UNIT

Year group:
Years 9, 10 and 11. Mixed age range and mixed ability group of 5 young people.
Revision of Key Stage 3 Science.

Lesson:

Using a Visualiser as a resource, learn about basic plant structure and how the plant organs
allow the life processes to take place.

Aim –

To be able to make careful observations.

To be able to record and explain their observations using prior scientific knowledge,
understanding and vocabulary.
To know basic plant structure.
To know the function of the four main plant organs.
To have an understanding of how plants reproduce.

Prior Learning –

To know that plants are sensitive to their surrounding. Plants respire. The flower head attracts
insects.

How the Visualiser was used –

We used the Visualiser to demonstrate a close up which would

otherwise be difficult to show to the group. We were able to show
the objects in close detail. The image was able to be captured so
that we could discuss the parts of a plant and illustrate sections at
another time without dissecting another flower.

The Visualiser provided ‘live’ real time pictures directly into our USB
and whiteboard. The Visualiser gave us excellent picture quality
and the flexible goose neck camera and the light gave excellent
images. The Young People were able to annotate the screen using
the Smart Board and using the zoom feature highlight certain areas of the plant and the mini
beast. Butterfly Wings, Snails Shells and Fir Cones and Flowers were seen extremely
effectively.
The benefits of the Visualiser –

Clear and immediate examination of the flower was possible. The Zoom feature is very useful
and it was motivating to the Young People as they had never used one before. The opportunity
to observe the introductory experiment of dissecting the flower. The teacher is able to model
observational skills and to develop vocabulary. It provides a real and practical experience. As
we do not have a scanner, the Visualiser was useful.

Resources –

Visualiser.
Tulips.
Dissecting knife.

Next Steps –

To make labelled drawings. To mount a cross section of the flower onto card.
Young People to produce their own PowerPoint presentations to illustrate what they have learnt
using the captured photos taken with the Visualiser.
