ABE 3612C - Homework Assignment 8 Due Monday 10-17-2011

Question 1 (Answers: Tcenter = 6.18C; Tsurface = -5.29C) In order to shorten the cooling time of an apple, one of your friends decides to place it in a freezer at -18C. The apple, initially at 21C, is assumed to have the following homogenous and constant properties: = 850 kg/m, k = 0.418 W/(mC) and CP = 3810 J/(kgC). Considering the apple as a sphere with a diameter of 8.8 cm and assuming a uniform convective heat transfer coefficient of 15 W/(m C), determine the center and surface temperatures of the fruit after 1 h. Question 2 (Answers: a) 98.2C; b) 87.4C; c) 8.26x106 J; d) 86.4C) A short cylinder ( = 4530 kg/m3, CP = 3.89 (kJ/(kgC), k = 12 W(mC)) of diameter D = 25 cm and height H = 15 cm is initially at a uniform temperature of Ti = 150C. The cylinder is now placed in atmospheric air at 20C, where heat transfer takes place by convection with a heat transfer coefficient of h = 50 W/(m C). After 2.5 hours of cooling, calculate (a) the center temperature of the cylinder; (b) the center temperature of the top surface of the cylinder; (c) the total heat transfer from the cylinder and (d) the average temperature of the cylinder. Question 3 (Answer: 56.2C) A semi-infinite aluminum cylinder (k = 237 W/mK, = 9.71 X 105 m2/s) of diameter D = 15 cm is initially at a uniform temperature of Ti = 115C. The cylinder is now placed in water at 10C, where heat transfer takes place by convection with a heat transfer coefficient of h = 140 W/m2K. Determine the temperature at the center of the cylinder 5 cm from the end surface 8 min after the start of cooling. Question 4 (Answer: -6.6C) A 2-cm-high cylindrical ice block (k = 2.22 W/mK and = 0.124 X 107 m2/s) is placed on a table on its base of diameter 2 cm in a room at 24C. The heat transfer coefficient on the exposed surfaces of the ice block is 13 W/m2K, and heat transfer from the base of the ice block to the table is negligible. If the ice block is not to start melting at any point for at least 3 h, determine what the initial temperature of the ice block should be.
