English in Nursing

English in Nursing subject in Stikes Mahardika is an integrated part of its curriculum and has been applied for years. It is with consideration that nowadays English as an international means of communication plays significant roles for nursing students to compete in this globalization era. Mastering English will be badly needed for the sake of their communication and existence as nurses both in local areas and abroad. Nursing students are demanded to be able to speak and write English so that they can easily access any information to develop their competence and take active part in global competition. They may study and work abroad easier if they master the language. In Stikes Mahardika, English subject aims to improve students ability in using English as a means of communication both for spoken and written. To do so, various methods and techniques of teaching and learning are applied to achieve the targeted competence. Methods which require students activeness and participation have been used in the learning process. Since the beginning of its implementation in 2005, English has passed through some changes on its focus and credits. In the curriculum of grade 2005 until grade 2007, English was given a portion of 12 credits with 4 levels namely English 1, 2, 3 and 4. Then, in grade 2008 grade 2009, it was renewed and applied for the same credits but with only three levels, English 1, 2 and 3. Each weighted for 4 credits. The current curriculum (grade 2010 present), English is of 8 credits divided into two levels: English 1 and 2. Each of which has its own particular purposes. However, the main purpose remains the same that is to develop students ability to communicate and write ideas in English. English 1 focuses on the mastery of nursing terminologies and cases as well as spoken communication skills by presentation, role play, discussion, and so on. English 2 is the advancement of English 1. In addition to nursing terminologies, it gives students more chances to explore their skills in academic writing, presentation, and journal analysis particularly nursing. Besides, students will also learn such English proficiency test as TOEFL and IELTS and discuss any nursing cases to upgrade their competence as a nurse. The tasks given require students to be more active and independent to gain successful results by the end of the course.
