TERM PROJECT PRESTRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN

Department of Civil Engineering FALL 2013

You are working for a consultant firm and your firm just got hired to design a Prestressed Concrete Deck Girder bridge. While other members of the design team have been assigned to design other components of the bridge, you have been asked to design prestressed concrete girders. You are allowed to do this with no more than one other member in your design team. The cross-section and longitudinal sections of the bridge are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. The bridge is to be designed to resist AASHTO and Pakistan Highway live loading. Normal weight concrete with tendons with psi and stress relieved low relaxation psi is to be used. Grade 60 ordinary reinforcement is to be

used. The concrete strength at transfer is 75% of the ultimate strength. The bridge is to be constructed in Lahore. Due to site constraints, the girders of one of the spans are shored during construction while those of the other span are un-shored. You are assigned to design girders for both spans. The design parameters of interest are economy of design, serviceability requirements and sufficiency of strength.

Since your firm expects to be frequently involved in such designs in the future, you are asked to develop an excel spread-sheet or Matlab code to carry out these design calculations. The design calculations have to be submitted to the client along with construction drawings of the girders and therefore should be clearly understandable for wetting and scrutiny. A sample spread sheet of the design calculations has been provided for your reference in this regard.
