Jake Drouillard Musical theatre voice 10/05/13 Saturday Night is a musical by Stephen Sondheim.

It has a rather simple plot following a young man and his friends who are distraught about being dateless on a Saturday night. The main character is Gene a young man who wishes to make it big and in the process of trying to make it rich quickly barely escapes being put in jail. I very much enjoyed the old timey feeling of the show, which while it was written in the 50s, must have been quite interesting for audience given not being put on to stage until the late 90s. It was interesting because it felt of a dance show in style but had no real place for dance numbers. Stephen Sondheim has a knack for writing music that is completely separate in vocals and accompaniment that still fit perfectly, making them extremely interesting to listen to but also very difficult to perform. This show is very different in them then many of Sondheims pieces, which tend to be more fanciful such as Into the Woods, or at least very unlikely scenarios such as Sweeney Todd and Forum. This show reminds me in styling to the many tap shows of its time such as Thoroughly Modern Millie and Singing in the Rain, but without the dance numbers. It also feels slightly similar to Sondheims Gypsy.
