Week 2: Focus on Maps

Lesson: Newscast Objective: At the end of this lesson the students will know who to create a video using
the Ben and Ted app as well as create a script.

Content Standards:
Social Studies California State Content Standards: A childes place in time and space 1.2 Students compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of places and people and describe the physical and/or human characteristics of places. 1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the 7 continents, and 4 oceans. 2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three-dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location. 3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols. 4. Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. Speaking and Listening: SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. a. Materials:
1. ELMO 2. iPads 3. Tom and Ben app

Instructional Directions:
1. Show students a recorded newscast of why the class is arranged the way it is by using the Tom and Ben app and the created map from yesterday that the class created together.

2. Using random selection, put the students into pairs and have them put their classroom maps on their desks. 3. Have one student from each pair check out an iPad and open up the Tom and Ben

app. Instruct the students that they will need to choose one of the maps to upload into the app and also use that map to talk about during their recorded newscast using the Tom and Ben app. Walk around to help students get started and help them take a picture of their map and upload onto the Tom and Ben app. Give the students 20 to 30 minutes to create their newscast. Walk around to assist all students with their video productions Make sure to share the video to your email so that the videos can be shown to the class over the ELMO as well as uploaded onto the class blog. In closing, show all the videos to the class and remind the students that their videos are on the class blog for their families to view.
