ABSTRACT
Nowadays there is an increasing number of electric and electronics equipment that has carried out a growing number of problems that affect to the power quality. It is well known that the main power quality deviations are caused by short-circuits, harmonics distortion, notching, voltage sag and voltage swells as well as the transients due to load switching. Nevertheless, whenever the disturbances lasts for only few cycles a simple observation of waveforms in a bus-bar may not be enough to allow one to recognize that there is a problem in there or to identify the sort of problem. This paper includes an approach that is able to provide the detection and location of time as well as the identification of power quality problems present in both transient and steady state signals. The method was developed using Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT). The given signal was decomposed using wavelet transformation and any change on the smoothness of the signal is detected at the finer wavelet transform resolution levels. Later the energy curve of the given signal is evaluated and a relationship between this energy signal curve and the one of the corresponding fundamental component is established.
