STRUCTURE OF MATTER UNIT PLAN

WEEK 2: DAY 4-5

Grouping of the Elements Standard Set 3. Structure of Matter d. Students know the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) depend on molecular motion. e. Students know that in solids the atoms are closely locked in position and can only vibrate; in liquids the atoms and molecules are more loosely connected and can collide with and move past one another; and in gases the atoms and molecules are free to move independently, colliding frequently. NETS for students: 1. Creativity and Innovation 2. Communication and Collaboration 3. Research and information fluency Objective: Students will be able to compare the states of matter while analyzing the periodic table of the elements. Materials: computer Discovery Education Video: Physical Science and the States of Matter paper science journal Day 4 Step 1: Students will watch Discovery Education Video: Physical Science and the States of Matter. While watching video they will take notes about the different states of matter in their science journal. Step 2: Students will illustrate in their science journal matter in the form of a solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. They will write a brief description of each form under their illustration.

Day 5 Step 1: Students will need to go to the computer lab with their science journal. Step 2: Using their notes from the video and states of matter illustrations in their science journals students will use Comic Creator to create comic strip of a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma character with at least 3 descriptive traits. Students will print a copy of the comic strip and turn it in for a grade. a) when selecting the template make sure to select six panels. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/comic/
