Empire Magazine 2008

The typography used for the masthead is a paradigm used in order to portray dramatic style of the magazine. The sans serif font makes the magazine title more vivid and therefore stands out more. The colour of the font is another paradigm. The bright red can be easily depicted from afar, benefiting this product when it is amongst others being sold.

the masthead and height of the letters take up a lot of the top section of the magazine making it again easier to recognise and draws attention to itself because of this.

The banner of The 500 Greatest Movies Of All Time is placed slightly overlapping the masthead. This could have been done in order to publicize the special feature inside this issue and also gives a more focused theme for the magazine and therefore could appeal to a niche audience they wouldnt normally attract. Rather than having this sub-title as a flash at the bottom of the magazine could be to draw attention to this magazine when it is stacked behind others with only the title showing. Empire hope to attract more customers via this, emphasised by the use of shadowing on the thin contrasting font.

The main image used adheres to The 500 Greatest Movies Of All Time. The white background colour of the image contrasts with the rest of the dark magazine appearance, however still adheres to the film noir genre due to the use of shadows surrounding the characters, suggesting darker themes for the plot, but also the surrounding cover.

The magazine editors have chosen a famous screenshot from the film, which is widely recognisable for their specific target audience.
