What is a Synthesis Essay?


Written discussion that draws on multiple sources Must infer relationships among sources

Before inferring relationships must be able to summarize Must go beyond summary to make judgments (critique) Must be able to apply source information to topic (analyze)

What is an argument synthesis?


Purpose is to persuade Thesis is a claim about which reasonable people could disagree Strategy is to find and use convincing support for your claim

What are the 3 elements of argument?

Claim
Proposition or conclusion attempting to prove

Support
Fact or expert opinion (sources)

Assumption
Underlying belief or principle about some aspect of the world and how it operates Links supporting evidence to claim
