Producing Data: Probability Samples

Chapter 5 Section 1b

Random Samples
The best way to avoid bias, is to allow chance to select the sample Simple Random Sample (SRS)
A sample of size n that consists of n individuals from the population chosen in such a way that every set of n individuals has an equal chance to be in the sample actually selected.

SRS from Calculator:

Math > PRB > 5: randInt( randInt(minimum, maximum, # of values)
NOTE: If you dont enter a number of values the calculator will give you one number.

Terms
Probability Sample
A sample chosen by chance This is an essential principle of statistical sampling

TYPES:
Stratified Random Sample Cluster Sample

Stratified Random Sample

Divide population into groups of individuals, called strata, that are similar in some way that is important to the response. Then choose a separate SRS in each stratum and combine these SRSs to form the full sample

Cluster Sample
Divides the population into groups, or clusters. Some of these clusters are randomly selected. Then all individuals in the chosen clusters are selected to be in the sample.
