PROMPT What causes Mayella Ewell to explode at Atticus and the court?
Notice that the STATEMENT is arguable (its an interpretation of data, not merely a statement of fact).

In chapter 18 of Lees To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus cross-examination of Mayella Ewell causes Mayella to explode at the court because Atticus demonstrates to the court that Mayella is guilty of lying about her beating. Mayellas lying to the court begins to appear deceptive when he says about Mayellas testimony, Youre becoming suddenly clear on this point. A while ago you couldnt remember too well, could you? (250). When Atticus declares that Mayella is becoming suddenly clear he is implying that Mayella is lying by making things up. After all, when people dont tell the truth, they contradict themselves with their statements that they must later reconcile with other statements. This is exactly what Mayella does, thus allowing the courtroom to conclude that Mayella is lying. And Atticuss demonstrating that Mayella is lying is what causes her to explode at the court. If she had been innocent, she most likely would have remained calm at Atticuss accusations. But she doesnt, and this is the reason she loses control.
