AS Level Film Studies- Production planning: A location report For my AS Level Film Studies project portfolio, following a textual analysis of two romantic movies; Dear John (US- 2010) and Atonement (UK- 2007) in which I have studied how messages and values are communicated in both movies. I have developed my ideas using the planning of an artefact based upon the central ideas for my textual analysis. Therefore, I will discover the messages and values communicated in them and also gain information about the main characters in them. As well as, I am creating short piece of film in the romance genre based on my location report. My location report is going to consist of 5 in which one is internal and the other 4 are external. These images are going to show the environment I intend to use in my creative artefact. Location 1- A external perception of Kings Cross Station.

My first location is Kings Cross Station. This location is ideal because it suits the scene of my character entering the station. I am doing 9 key frames so it will be accessible for that. I did not have to seek the permission. This scene links to the next scene of the character. For my cinematography I intend to use a long shot which will include my main character running into the station, creating tension. For the sound, this part of the scene is going to be nondigetic as sound will be added to the scene to create a better sound effect. Digetic and nondigetic sounds play an important role in the textual analysis which improve the audiences

understanding of the characters main characteristics and also it gives a greater effect on the scene. I am also going to use natural lightning. Location 2- Kings Cross Station- Tickets booth/ Train leaving times.

This location is ideal because it shows the times of the trains which will be used during the scene. I am doing 9 key frames so it will be accessible for that. I did not have to seek permission. This scene links with the one before. This scene is going to consist of mid shots, long shots and close up shots, to indicate the action taken place in this specific scene. The camera will be placed at the back opposite the tickets booths so the audience can clearly see what is going on in that scene and also so the character can be seen looking up at the times of the train leaving and also at the same time asking a man for the time. Therefore, the long shots are taken when the actor looks up at the times of the trains leaving and a mid shot of the character asking someone for the time. In terms of the sound, it will be all digetic so the audience can hear the people around the character discussing things and also the audience can hear the character asking someone for the time. Shot reverse shot is going to be used at the moment of the character asking another person for the time. I will need to ask a person if they could be in the picture for this action. The character acting is going to be standing in the middle and this will indicate that he is lost and also confused compared to the surrounding people awaiting their train to come. I am also going to use natural lightning.

Location 3- The view of the whole station.

My third location is also an internal view of the whole station. This location is ideal because this is the scene where the character is going to ask a railway instructor for directions and also when the character is running towards the tunnel. I am doing 9 key frames so it will be accessible for that. I did not have to seek permission. This scene links to the one before and the next scene of the character. For cinematography I will include a variety of shots from different angles consuming the surroundings, the characters actions and facial expressions. This location allows the audience to gain the knowledge of the station and also will include the digetic sounds of the characters quick conversation with the railway instructor and also the footsteps of the character running and his ragged breathing. I need to ask one of the railway instructors if they could be able to be in one picture. This is similar to the movies I am analysing which are Dear John (2010) and Atonement (2007). These two movies consist of the male character finding the girl of their dreams. I am also going to use natural lightning.

Location 4- Platform 8.

In this location, the scene will consist of the character realising hes on the wrong platform because he can see the girl on the opposite side of the platform. This location is ideal because it suits the action that is going to take place in the scene. For mise-en-scene I will include in this scene the interaction between the character calling the girl from the other side of the platform and also the train from the girls platform coming out of the tunnel. For sound, I will use digetic sound so the audience can hear the character calling the girl. There
will also be long shots of the train platform opposite the characters which then will indicate the fact that hes on the wrong platform. Shot reverse shot is then used as the male character calls out the girls name and the camera shows the girls facial expression before the train on her side of the platform comes in front of her and then the camera goes back to the male characters reaction. I am also going to use natural lightning.

Location 5- Platform 8 and 7.

My last location is the two platforms that will include the scene of the male character looking for
the girl. In terms of cinematography, this scene will include of long shots and mid shots. The long shots will be used to show the character running onto platform 8 instead of 7. For sound, I am still using digetic sounds to indicate footsteps, the characters breathing whilst running and also the character mumbling things to himself as he reaches the platform the girl is on. On top of that, the sound of the train stopping and continuing to leave the platform is heard whilst the character is running towards the next platform. This is a non- digetic sound occurring because the characters facial expression is used using a mid shot whilst the character can hear the train leave. This scene is similar to the movies in my textual analysis Dear John (2010) and Atonement (2007) because both movies have the characters falling in love with a girl and also both male characters are expressing their love to the girl. Therefore, this scene enhances the genre of romance because the male character is expressing his love for the girl. I am also going to use natural lightning.
