Getting Married at Christ Church Morningside

From the Rector: Very Revd. Susan Macdonald We welcome enquiries for those who wish to have a Christian marriage ceremony and get married in church. This leaflets sets out what we are able to offer at Christ Church and what the legal requirements are in Scotland. Scottish Legal Requirements The rules for getting married in Scotland are governed by the Register General for Scotland, and you must go through the process of applying for a schedule from them. There are strict timescales for this process. A marriage cannot take place without this document. The City of Edinburgh Council has an informative Birth, marriage/civil partnerships and death section which can also advise. By law both parties to a proposed civil or religious marriage (which includes other belief systems) are required to submit marriage notice forms to the registrar of the district in which the marriage is to take place informing him of their intention to marry. Forms for giving notice can be obtained from any registrar of births etc. in Scotland or from the National Records of Scotland website where a list of fees can also be found: www.gro-scotland.gov.uk. Notice must be given in the three-month period prior to the date of the marriage and NOT LATER than 15 days before that date.

Scottish Episcopal Church Requirements Susan, the rector will talk with you about the practicalities and understandings of a church wedding and seek permission of the bishop if either of you have been married before.
