Formal letters

They consist of: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. A formal greeting(Dear Sir/Madam, Dear Ms/Mrs X) Introduction opening remarks + reason(s) of writing Main body-main subject(s) in detail, starting a new paragraph for each topic Conclusion closing remarks (I look forward to hearing) Formal ending(Yours faithfully-when you dont know the name; Yours sincerely-when you do) Letter applying for a job/course

A)opening remarks/reason(s) for writing The name of the job/course,where and when you saw it advertised B)main body paragraph -age,present job and studies -qualification -experience -skills and personal qualities that are suitable for the job/course C)closing remarks -any other important information(when you are available for interview,where and when you can be contacted,references you can send,a remark that you hope your application will be considered etc) You usually use: -the present simple to describe skills/personal qualities e.g. I am a patient and reliable person -the present perfect to talk about recent work/studies e.g. I have been working atfor 2 years I have recently finished

-the past simple to talk about past experiences e.g. I worked

Informal letters
Format: 1. Informal greeting(Dear) 2. An introduction with remarks(asking about health)and mention your reason for writing 3. Main body-write the main subject(s) of the letter in detail,starting a new paragraph for each topic 4. Conclusion-closing remarks-Thats all my news for nowWrite back soon 5. Informal ending(lots of love/best wishes + first name) OPENING/CLOSING REMARKS Opening remarks a)questions/wishes about recent events,the persons health b)a thank you to the the person for their last letter,comments about their news c)an apology for a delay in writing/replying d)the reason why you are writing Closing remarks

a)the reason why you must end the letter b)greetings to the persons family/friends c)wishes,a promise,an invitation d)a request to the person to reply soon Informal writing is characterized by: -everyday vocabulary(I had a great time) -colloquial expressions/idioms(drop me a line) -short form(cant,dont,Im,Ill)

Style -advanced vocabulary e.g. Im writing to enquire whether -formal linking words (consequently,however) -passive voice (I can be contacted) -polite forms without contraction Do NOT use colloquial expressions, phrasal verbs, idioms and short forms!!
