Islam and traditional African religions have coexisted in Africa for centuries. While Islam spread across northern and western Africa beginning in the 7th century, elements of traditional African religions, such as belief in spirits and practices of divination, have been integrated or syncretized with Islamic practices. Today, most Africans practice a blend of Islam and traditional African religions, demonstrating the ability of the two faiths to coexist and influence one another within the same communities.
